Guide to organic wool duvets
What sets our organic wool duvet apart from those of the competition?
To our knowledge, there is no French website selling wool duvets 100% certified organic. However, you will find quantities of duvets made from “ecological wool”, “biowool”, “organic wool” or “untreated wool”.
The reality is that no independent organization proves the ecological nature of these wools, which is nevertheless the foundation of organic. These duvets have at best a certified organic envelope but a product to be organic must be 100% organic.
Our wool duvets organic are certified GOTS not only for their wool but also for their cotton cover.
Our wool comes exclusively from French or English farms.
It is obtained by shearing live animals and produced in a completely ecological and animal-friendly way: the sheep graze on pastures that have not been treated with fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides.
Their health is carefully monitored and does not include unnecessary treatment with antibiotics.
What is certified organic cotton GOTS ?
Conventional cotton cultivation is extremely polluting. It represents 25% of pesticides used worldwide. In addition, cotton processing releases harmful substances into nature, not to mention the drying up of waterways due to intensive irrigation.
Conversely:
- organic cotton is grown with compost replacing chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
- It is GMO-free and the water consumption required for its cultivation is halved compared to conventional cotton.
- Its fiber is bleached with hydrogen peroxide and not with chlorine.
- The dyes are made without heavy metals or other carcinogenic substances. Crop rotation in organic farming helps oxygenate the land and preserve its richness.
- Organic cotton cultivation also allows producers, by reducing their investments, to escape the trap of debt. It improves their working conditions, their health and that of those around them.
- the absence of pesticides and insecticides,
- halving water consumption,
- crop rotation to preserve the land and reduce the risk of disease.
What is certified organic wool GOTS ?
How is our organic wool cleaned before making our duvets?
The maintenance of our wool begins with soaking in four successive alkaline baths (PH at least equal to 9), at a temperature of 60°C, to degrease it.
The wool is then washed at 60°C with a non-polluting biodegradable detergent added to soda ash, then rinsed several times with clean water.
It is then dried at 80°C then bleached with chlorine-free hydrogen peroxide. Once cleaned, the wool is packaged in 300 kg bales carefully wrapped in clean bags and then stored in a dedicated warehouse, far from any unprocessed wool.
Once the cleaning process is completed, the residual fat content of the wool does not exceed 0.9%. It is then ready to be spun.
What is the label Oeko-Tex® standard 100?
In addition to the label GOTS, our duvets are Oeko Tex certified® standard 100. This means that our supplier is checked for the effective absence of harmful substances in the finished product, which ensures that there is no contamination of organic raw materials (wool or cotton) during manufacturing.
A manufacturer can affix the label Oeko-Tex® on a product if it has been proven through exhaustive laboratory tests that all of its components, including accessories, represent no danger to health. These harmfulness controls include substances regulated and prohibited by law, but also chemicals known to be of health concern as well as parameters introduced as health precautions.
The more intense the contact with the skin, the stricter the criteria to be met in terms of human ecology.
Our wool duvets Edelweiss organic are therefore the most controlled and safest on the French market.
What is the right price for an organic wool duvet?
Many customers surprised by the extremely high sales prices charged by some of our colleagues (and not the least) rightly question us about what could explain why our duvets are less expensive than those of the competition, fearing that this price difference is justified by products of lower quality.
The explanation is in fact to be found in the pricing policy of our competitors who literally ride on their image and reputation, claiming to impose crazy prices on their customers and on the natural bedding market, in which they are often in no way specialists.
Their selling prices and the margins charged are all the more insane as their only alibi is often a "French manufacture"... Justification that is all the lighter since French regulations make it possible to claim "made in France" as long as most of the product is assembled in France, whether the different components (envelope, filling, finishing bias, etc.) that make it up are manufactured on the other side of the planet or not!
For our organic wool duvets, we have chosen to produce in central Europe which we have entrusted to a factory specializing in the manufacture of natural bedding items for almost 80 years.
We have selected Merino wool from France or England and high quality organic cotton. both certified GOTS and we have established manufacturing specifications guaranteeing our products and therefore our customers, manufacturing according to the rules of the art and meticulous finishing going well beyond market standards.
Our duvets are then only sold at the right price! No more, no less.
